The Green River Formation is famous.   Volcanic activity caused the pollution of an inland sea at this site.  The sea was deprived of oxygen which then caused the death of the fish it contained.   In this way, an extensive fauna of fish and land creatures from the edge of the lake were preserved.  Crocodiles, birds, lizards, insects and plants have all been found.  This gives a fascinating and complete view of the Eco system at the time!    From the Eocene period.
