Cleoniceras Ammonite from Madagascar. Lower Cretaceous period, 110 million years ago. These ammonites became available about 10 yrs ago and are now highly collectable but also snapped up across the market for their highly decorative and entrancing detail. This specimen is a very lovely rich brown calcite with distinct markings and red glints of Mother of Pearl. Supplied with a stand, this super squid will astound all visitors for millenia to come.
A magnificent giant pair of Cleoniceras Ammonite halves were sold on the Channel Four programme, ‘Four Rooms’, to the equally magnificent, Tamara Beckwith.
Ammonites were early squid-like creatures and have a phenomena of ‘sutures’, somewhat similar to tree rings, in that their shells still show the markings of the gas compartments which aided their buoyancy – it is these and the remains of mother of pearl, together with the calcification process which happens during the fossilisation which makes their appearance so attractive.
